Poppy and Fern was created by Rachel Pruett here in Austin in 2010.
When Rachel was a child, her grandmother taught her how to cross stitch. She loved the process of slowing down to sew every stitch with care. She has learned a few more stitches along the way, gone to art school for photography and she became a pre kindergarten teacher. Wanting to keep her creative pursuits alive while teaching, she started going to shops to rummage for old brass pieces to make jewelry from. One day she found an amazing frame and decided to stitch an anchor in it, and the rest is history. She has been thinking of whimsical things of beauty to stitch in the frames she finds, ever since.
“I love taking a lovely old process and making it new again. Every stitch I make reminds me of my grandmother that was so dear to me and encouraging of my creative passions. Each piece is free hand embroidered, so no two look exactly the same. I love that they are unique, just like the person wearing it. I hope that my line of hand embroidered necklaces can help add some whimsy and beauty to your ensemble.”
